United Nations Secretary-General Appoints Denise Brown of Canada as United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Denise Brown of Canada as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sudan, with the host Government’s approval, effective 1 September. She will also serve as Humanitarian Coordinator.
Ms. Brown brings over 25 years of experience in humanitarian affairs and recovery, with a strong focus on complex emergencies. She most recently served as the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, where she led the frontline humanitarian response and laid the groundwork for recovery efforts, particularly at the community level.
Prior to that, she served as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), concurrently holding the positions of Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator.
Ms. Brown also held several senior leadership roles with the World Food Programme (WFP), including Director of the Emergency Preparedness and Supportive Response Division, Director of Policy and Programmes at WFP’s headquarters in Rome, and Director for West and Central Africa, based in Dakar, Senegal, covering operations across 20 countries. Earlier in her career with WFP, she worked on a range of coordination settings, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, Niger, and Somalia.
Prior to joining the United Nations, Ms. Brown worked with non-governmental organizations in Haiti and Cambodia.
She holds a Master of Science degree from Purdue University in the United States and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia in Canada.
She is fluent in English and French.
