Economist in Guatemala

What preoccupies an Economist in an upper middle-income country?  Jaime A. Garron Bozo, the economist in the Resident Coordinator’s office in Guatemala works with peers across the UN, International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and other development partners to support the Government improve domestic resource mobilization and public expenditure quality to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  In 2020, Jaime led the preparation of a background paper to establish the UN’s common position on fiscal reform in Guatemala, identifying specific entry points for the UN with respect to policy recommendations on the country’s fiscal reform efforts. In 2021, he supported the Resident Coordinator to create a Fiscal Working Group (“Mesa Fiscal”) along with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, UN entities (UNDP and ECLAC) and some bi-lateral development partners (European Union and the United States), as a forum for dialogue and regular coordination with the Ministry of Public Finance on fiscal policy issues and support to the Government.
