Opening Pathways to a More Sustainable Future for All in Serbia

Thanks to the joint support provided by the UN country team, under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator, the Government of Serbia was able to develop its national plan to reduce carbon emissions and meet the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement – its Nationally Determined Contribution – ahead of the latest UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt in November 2022, COP27.

Benefiting from the UN’s cross-sectoral support, Serbia is also one of the first countries to adopt the concept of “just energy transition” – a complex long-term shift to energy solutions supportive of the most vulnerable populations. In addition, the Government developed a pathway for a sustainable food system, through an integrated approach between different ministries.

Thanks to joint work between UN agencies, government ministries and civil society, spearheaded by the Resident Coordinator, the Government also launched in September 2022 a new legislative tool, ‘Leave No One Behind’, which ensures that every new law and national plan includes provisions to protect the most vulnerable and marginalized communities across Serbia.
