Head of Resident Coordinator's Office in Uruguay

Meet Gustavo De Armas, who serves as the Head of Resident Coordinator's Office in Uruguay since 2019. Gustavo believes that the key role of the UN in a high-income country like Uruguay is to support the country to build a strategic vision and pathways toward sustainable development, and engaging the private sector, through innovations.

Under the leadership of Gustavo, the Resident Coordinator’s Office supported the UN country team in Uruguay to receive USD11 million from the Joint SDG Fund.  This financial contribution allowed the UN country team to create the “Renewable Energy Innovation Fund”, a fund that engages local private banks and financial institutions to finance the Government’s ambition of a green and clean energy transition. Gustavo played a crucial role in convening the diverse partners to work jointly on the technical design of the project, as well as in building an inspiring private-public partnership.

Gustavo has also helped increase UN efficiencies, supporting the Resident Coordinator in the establishment of the first UN house in Uruguay in 2021, by bringing nine offices - UN agencies and joint initiatives – in one single location. The UN House is becoming a recognized and open place for all UN entities working for the country (resident and non-resident) and their stakeholders to foster further synergies and collaboration.
