New Resident Coordinator Anna Pont presents credentials to Head of State Obiang Nguema Mbasogo
Resident Coordinator Anna Pont presented credentials to Head of State Obiang Nguema Mbasogo at the Presidential Palace in Malabo, on Thursday 7 April 2022. During the hearing, the Resident Coordinator delivered to President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo a special message sent by the Secretary General.
Presenting credentials to the Head of State is the final step in the process of accepting a diplomat in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. As of today, Ms. Pont will embark on a mission on behalf of the Secretary General to coordinate the activities of the United Nations system with a view to support the country in achieving the goals set out in the 2019-2023 UNDAF, the 2030 Agenda and the Call to Action for Human Rights.
Responding to the media who approached her following her meeting with the Head of State, Ms. Pont said: "This was a special day for me and for the United Nations in the country." She thanked the President of the Republic for receiving her and expressed what she wished to do in the short term: "Begin a dialogue with the government to start the work and provide the support needed in priority by his country".
When asked by the media about the way she envisages her mandate as the Head of the United Nations system in Equatorial Guinea, Ms. Pont said: "The United Nations has been working for years in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in the areas of health, development, among others; We will continue on the same line of projects and the ability to provide the support that the country needs."
