DCO provides managerial and oversight functions for the Resident Coordinator system. It provides substantive guidance and support to Resident Coordinators and UN country teams, in addition to daily backstopping to Resident Coordinator’s offices.  This includes ensuring that Resident Coordinators and their Offices have the capacities, skillsets, tools and funding they need to do their job.

DCO also acts as a key conduit for supporting the UN's activities to advance the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, through the Resident Coordinator system, by helping to shape and support policy, programme and operations in country. This includes supporting quality Common Country Analysis and Cooperation Frameworks, monitoring and reporting on the implementation of Cooperation Frameworks and any other relevant plans, communicating results and advocating for critical priorities, and advancing system-wide efficiencies. DCO activities to that end are advanced through collective ownership by the UN Sustainable Development Group.
